My hubby made this for me 3 or 4 years ago and it’s still going strong. The worms make their own way out so providing a steady but slow stream of food for the birds. Saves money and also prevents certain birds from nicking the lot. lol.

He used;

An Aluminium can – to hold the live mealworms
A plastic plantpot tray – for them to crawl out into
A nut and bolt – to hold the above 2 items together
A wire coat hanger – for hanging it with
A plastic fizzy drink bottle (bottom) – to form a rain proof lid

1) Cut top off the can. (scissors will do 1, 2, 3 4 and 7)
2) Pierce a hole in bottom centre of it for bolt to pass thru
3) Pierce 4 holes around bottom edge of can to allow worms to crawl out
into plastic tray.
4) Pierce can approx 1/3 down from top, on opp sides, to insert coat
hanger hook
5) using pliars, cut wire coat hanger to length and bend it to shape. The
coat hanger passes right thru the can and just out the other side so
providing a little more support to the flimsy can.
6) still with pliars, use something like an old nail, heat it to glowing red on
the gas hob and make 4 or 5 holes in the plastic plantpot tray for the
worms to fall thru to the ground (for the larger birds eg Blackbirds,
Starlings)
7) Cut the bottom off a fizzy drink bottle for a weatherproof lid.

Further mods were;
To prevent the wind from blowing the lid off he put 2 small dia, aligned, holes in the lid and in the can, then pushed thru a length of copper wire to act as a lock. Later he broke off the lip around the tray making it a smaller dia. This prevents the larger birds getting onto the tray and scoffing all the worms.

Assemble it and watch the fun.

xx
