Hi everyone - just like to say hello and that I am hoping for great results from my new web cam installed autumn 2012 ready for the new season. This was bought for me as a gift after my constant groans when viewing a pair of blue tits using my first bird box and not being able to see inside. I was honoured that the birds had considered my box a des-res and I felt very lucky to see the successful fledging of two chicks (could have been more which went early morning) go into the outside world. With this in mind I had to drop a few hints to family as to what I would like as a birthday gift because I was by now hooked!

The position of my box is about 12ft up the house wall, facing north and about 4ft from a bedroom window. Underneath the window is an extension roof which the chicks used as a landing stage before going off to look for parents in nearby gardens. They have a clear way in to the box with no foliage obscuring their flight path. It is also safe from preditors and a good way from my bird station.
I have had what I think is the same bird visit twice a day for 1 week but as the box is dark in daytime the camera switches to night vision which makes the birds grey in colour. This bird appears to have some characteristics which are more distinct than others visiting and is pecking the inside for security purposes.

Is it likely to be the female that is returning to make sure her claimed box is still available?

I see that my diary states interest in the box started as early as 7th Feb. However, the recent cold snap in early March put them off a little and I was unable to record any visits. Now the weather has warmed up a little in Leicestershire things are moving again so fingers crossed I am chosen!
Good luck to all birders for a successful year and hopefully another increase in this adorable little bird.
