A few weeks go I started making fat blocks again, to go in the caged feeder:

This block weighs about 265g and is visited by blue, great and coal tits as well as long tailed tits and a robin. How long did it take until it looked like this?

(According to the BTO, a bluetit weighs 11g, great tit 18g, coal tit 9g, long tailed tit 9g, robin 18g).

That's an impressive looking fat block (well, it was!). I am guessing that it didn't take very long at all, and judging from the fact that I filled a similar sized container full of seed and sunflower hears and it was gone with three or four days, then my guess is three days, but it wouldn't surprise me if you said two! Those little birds sure can chomp their way throughh some food!

I've never had a go at making my own fat blocks - I must look one out some time and give it a go. At the moment it is costing me a fortune in bird food to keep up with them!

I'd never be able to keep up with them if a block lasted only a morning, though no doubt one will vanish more quickly than it does at the moment, when the weather gets really cold.

I cropped the times off the two photographs - the first was taken on Nov 26th at 10.10.36, the second was taken the next day at 15.39.36 so ot lasted a bit less than two days.

A fat block usually lasts just one day now - but it's worth it to see a sight like this! Smile
