What does 'Lesser Spotted' mean?

Or 'Great Spotted' for that matter. I've got an inkling I can't seem to pinpoint a definition.

If you're thinking of woodpeckers - I've always assumed it refers to Lesser "spotted woodpecker" not "lesser spotted" woodpecker. Similarly Great "spotted woodpecker".

ie - referring to the size of the bird, not the size of the spots! Smile

I see.

So lesser=smaller, spotted=covered in spots (as opposed to frequency of sightings).

Yes, that's right. The lesser spotted woodpecker is only the size of a sparrow, whereas the great spotted is much larger.
