The River Holme runs through the middle of the town, and is a wonderful place for birds. The coop Carpark section of the river has long been habituated by Mallard and Mallard derivatives including some delightful(to my eyes) buff coloured ones. These are usually associated with gloriously varied technicolour feral pigeons and jackdaws.

This morning I spotted a dipper (though unlike most of my previous dipper spots, this one was flying up and down the river after each dip,my general experience of the bird is that they tend to stay on the same little stretch,) a grey heron,(incredibly close view of this) a pied wagtail, a house sparrow and a female blackbird

all at water level: no sign of the grey wagtail this year for me though it has been reported as has the jay (also not seen by me) though this morning I did see a Mandarin duck on the water and Robin Blue tit and jackdaw on the banks where I have also seen wrens.

It sounds gorgeous, John! I've only been to Holmfirth once, and that was on a hiking trip, so we didn't have much time to enjoy the town. I hope you see the grey wagtail again soon.
