CHIRPY wildlife enthusiast Bill Oddie is stepping down from BBC Two series Autumnwatch and Springwatch to concentrate on other projects.
The Goodies comedian, who has presented the gentle BBC Two shows for four years, will be taking a break to work on some new projects with the Beeb.

One of these projects will be animal programme Bill Oddie's Top Ten, with Bill also presenting a one-hour special on his favourite Springwatch moments so far.

Co-presenters Kate Humble and Simon King will continue to host the new series of Springwatch in May in Bill's absence.

Bill said: "I'm really going to miss working with Kate, Simon and the team.

"But after an amazing four years of really intense work it feels like the right time to take a breather and recharge my batteries."

Who could replace him?

I've never seen the Goodies, but appreciated his quirky character and enthusiasm in Springwatch, he will be missed in this household.

Excellent to hear he will still be doing other stuff though, hopefully still bird related

Sorry, but he won't be missed here. Best news I've heard in ages. Trying to still act like a "Goodie" spoilt it for me, I didn't find him funny then, and certainly found it out of place in a nature programme. Chris Packham to step in as a full time present hopefully. Smile

Bill had passed his sell by date for me- trying to be funny all the time frankly annoyed me and as for his patronising atitude towards Kate- dont get me started.
I want him to stick to serious birding stuff which he used to do so well.

Please dont let it be Alan Titchmarsh or Ben Fogle - neither of whom gets my vote

Mike Dilger or Iolo - surprised Jan you dont wish it to be he? Batting Eyelashes

Bill Oddie missed!! i think not. He should have gone years ago. Now the next in line should be Nick Baker. Or better still just leave Kate Kiss

But he is only taking a break, he'll be back... *g*

Pairing Bill Oddie and Kate Humble was genius. They where so mismatched it was perfect, and the show may suffer without him.

I agree with Tricia I really don't like Chris Packham not the nicest of characters in the flesh! and he gets on my nerves where as Mike or Gordon would do a far better job besides using Gordon would be go as Kate gets on really well with him and i think the two of them would be a good match!

Your spot on with Chris packham! if he was a chocolate he would eat himself. I met him once, at Martin-Mere, after ten mins, enough was enough.

I'm very surprised about your views of Chris Packham. Apart from his TV wildlife programmes, which I think are excellent and much better than Bill Oddie's, Elizabeth and I met him at Barnes where he was giving a talk on bird photography. After the talk he took a group out looking for things to photograph and to demonstrate the points he had made in his talk.

He was very friendly and approachable and clearly knew his stuff and was very willing to answer what to him must have been some very basic (and boring!) questions.

Whatever you think of him, looks like we'll be seeing more of him.
