I thought I'd have a go at growing something this year so I've planted some sunflower seeds. Despite my expectations they are growing really well but something has started nibbling on them. Any suspects? Is this harmful to the plant?

I would think an earwig may be a likely culprit Phil. You need those eggs to hatch and then the blue tit parents will pick the bugs off for you for little mouths. Could also be a sawfly larva or adult vine weevil though. You should go out and check the plant after dark. I hope you won't spray. Plant will probably be ok. Goldfinches will love the seedheads.

Thanks Steph,

It's 00:40 and I was just out looking around them and didn't see anything but a really tiny spider, and I know he's innocent. I'll check again tomorrow night. Apart from the leaves the plants are doing really well. Hopefully they'll provide the blue tit family with some home grown grub!

Incidentally when I was out I could hear Swifts in the air. Don't remember hearing them this late at night before.

They're starting to flower! I didn't do anything about the leaf eaters, never did find out what done it. Didn't harm them one bit.

There you go! Fabulous. When I grew some once the goldfinches preferred them to the sunhearts out of the feeder.
