Nice to see both birds staying in the box overnight. I've never understood why blue tit pairs don't roost together (well, peacefully anyway).

Things are really getting busy now, with two pairs of Martins having taken up residence Smile
Today there has been interest in all the nests, with one bird trying out both SDR and FS,
and getting grief from the pair already in SDL!
I thought martins were supposed to be communal birds!
The pair in SDL won't be long producing eggs, I think.

Here's an audio clip taken from a short piece of video of then mating...

I'm going to enable the remaining webcams now.

Here are the new FDL residents:

We have had lots of activity, and four of the five nests now have nests at various stages of construction.
It's quite difficult keeping track, because I think the birds move between the nests at times.
However, it looks like we have three pairs and a singleton, which is better than ever before! Smile
It's a shame that nobody is watching... Confused

The first egg of 2008 was laid this morning, by our first arrivals in the Side Double Left Nest Very Happy

There has been quite a lot of action around the Front Double nest, and it seems that the left-hand side residents have taken a dislike to the right-hand side ones Shocked

Wow, they don't waste any time, do they! It only seems five minutes since they arrived. Good luck for a productive season. Very Happy

I'm very pleased to hear that you got to see something! Very Happy
Today has been quite uneventful - this year the birds have built their nests well in advance of laying the eggs, unlike last year.
The singleton in the Front Single nest has done a great job with its nest construction, but I have yet to see any sign of a mate Sad

Been looking through the still photos on the site - some brilliant stills that everyone should take a look at - the sparrow attempting to enter FDL, and the best one showing the house martins face as he/she looks up to the camera in FS.
Its so lovely to see both birds in the nest together. Are there any other birds that do this? or is it just the house martins? I feel for the singleton, builds the nest but no one to share it with - sounds too familiar to me Rolling Eyes

This morning the martins in the Front Double Left nest produced their first egg Very Happy
I shall have the video running in the morning, hoping to get footage of another egg being laid...

It will be interesting to see how many more they might lay - the pair in SDL have stopped at two, but this means a better chance of survival.

After a week away on holiday in the Peak district, we have returned to find that things have progressed nicely, and that the Front Single nest is now occupied by two House Martins, where previously there was only one Very Happy
So, we now have three pairs, the SDL pair continue to incubate their three eggs, and the FDL pair now have four eggs, and seem to be taking their parental duties more seriously than before, keeping the eggs well covered nearly all of the time.
Hopefully, the new pair in FS will produce an egg or two in the not too distant future!

Two of the three eggs in the Side Double Left nest hatched this evening, which was rather a surprise. Very Happy
Last year, I think most eggs hatched first thing in the morning
As usual, the parent discards the egg shells immediately, and here are a couple of pictures:

Also, the sparrows that have been visiting the Front Double Right nest seem to have moved in, and started nest building. Rolling Eyes
