News from Finland: a pair of Bubo bubo (eagle owl) is currently feeding three nestlings in the very middle of our capital city Helsinki. They are nesting on top of Forum shopping center, and can be observed for example from tenth floor restaurant terrace of Sokos Hotel Vaakuna.

Eagle owls have started residing Helsinki because during last ten years, rabbits have largely spread there. The eagle owl that participated footy championships few year ago, is living in the vicinity of this pair.

On Sunday night (August 14th) here was a juvenile Strix uralensis (ural owl) whining near our house. Interesting thing is that almost exactly one year ago, on August 15th 2010, here was also a solitary ural owl whining one night. Owls work like a clock Laughing

Here's a publicity shot of me, related with this summer's Otus scops discovery.

Smile That was a stunt owl (long-eared owl). The real scops owl you can hear inside this Fenno-American hit song: www.box.net/shared/9gj2omx3j0zqbuac1u52

Tragicomic news: Daddy Owl was found dead in October. Cause of death was studied, and they found it had Herpes virus - possibly from a stock dove Shocked

One of the young owls was found dead in June. It possibly flew on wires or other structures in the city.

That'll teach him not to go snogging stock doves!

Will Mrs Owl likely find a new bloke, or aren't there other eagle owls anywhere nearby?

Yes she will, there are several eagle owl territories in our capital, and their number is growing.

Thanks. Finnish national birding magazine "Linnut" published last year my article about finding the scops owl. They wanted a photo of me there, too. I sent that one, suggesting them to insert it as a centerfold poster. They published it stamp-sized Laughing

Heard yester-evening Glaucidium passerinum (pygmy owl) to my yard. Interesting to hear if here will be more small owls around this spring..
