Roll on the floor laughing

I *think* we are up to 8 chicks this morning. Hard to tell precisely, since I can only really count remaining eggs and the chicks are quite good at covering them!

Maybe 9 chicks now, with only 2 eggs visible - at least, when I can see them, as the chicks are usually covering them pretty well! How long can hatching go on for? What will the parents do to any eggs that remain unhatched?

Matt they might need an extra bit of cooking but if the remaining eggs haven't hatched by close of business tomorrow it might be that they are infertile. Sometimes the last ones to be laid are and this is a large clutch. Parent will usually nudge them out of the nest or leave them to act as hot water bottles for the youngsters.
Haven't seen them smash them but have heard this does happen with GT's on occasions but not with BT's.
Hope they will hatch soon as the youngest need to hold their own in the nest otherwise its curtains. They all are timed you see to fledge together. Very Happy

Well Smile I am 98% sure that we have 11 live chicks at the moment. The last egg was there this morning, but not to be seen all afternoon - but I missed the hatch. I have been rewinding, pausing etc to try and get a count and finally got a good shot of 10 mouths, with another chick at the top that can't be seen easily in this still but is definitely there when watching the vid (just above the chick with beak facing upwards, top right of the visible chicks). So that makes 11 !!! One noticeably smaller mouth there, which might have been todays hatchling.

Looking good Matt, I am glued to your Live stream. Thanks for putting it up on the net! Your male is very good coming in all the time with food.
You never know, if food is plentiful, 11 can make it.

Thanks Smile I am glued to it too, with the stream one one screen and me - er - "working" on the other! I have been keeping an eye on the smaller ones (two noticeably smaller, I think) and was pleased to see at least one of them get a feed this morning and, indeed, did a poo. The smallest one seems to have a bit of pluck, at least, and is often jostling for attention although at this moment he has managed to get buried underneath a bigger one at the top of the screen.

At least they have not got knocked outside of the cup, it can be disastrous and they can die quickly from heat loss. For some reason the mother usually does not help bring them back in, not sure why... As long as they get feeds they are okay, but they are really just an insurance policy from the parents point of view, if the stronger chicks die. Nature and survival can be hard.. Rolling Eyes

I'm very cheerful, positive mood today!!!! Rolling Eyes Laughing

Yep. I think I am prepared for the possibility/probability, but obviously it would be nice not to have to go there! I know that from a survival point of view it is probably better that the stronger chicks get fed first, but I can't help rooting for the little guys every time she comes in with something!

Hi Matt
I know the feeling ....there is always a smaller one who you hope will push himself forward to get fed. Hope food is plentiful and the little ones get a chance. Fingers crossed

I spent all afternoon (again) watching the nest, and was getting worried that I hadn't been able to catch a shot of more than 10 chicks at once - and I must have paused and counted 10 chicks about 3-4 times (even that is hard enough). Please to report that I finally just managed to pause with all 11 in view - they seem to really come to life at this time of day, just before lights out:
