Looks like you are two days behind Smile Funny how closely they lay, when they finally get around to it. I wonder how many they will lay in the end? I have guessed 11 in the family sweep, which might be a little optimistic Very Happy

Thanks Matt -11 has been known on here even larger numbers by the Biggs but that was 2 females and quite a few didn't hatch! I would say average is 7/8 but they will always surprise us.

Sammi I thought it was odd yesterday as she didn't come to the box all day until roosting time so guessed I might have a surprise this morning. Lily has left the egg exposed to dry in the draught from the nest hole so wondering if she will pop in to check it?
Does it look like the feathers are covering something in your nest or are they just a lining to the cup?

Behaviour of mine seems to be to leave uncovered for an hour or two (including earlier eggs, which I think she uncovers before roosting the night before - hard to tell), then pop back in to cover all of the eggs for rest of day mid-morning. That could just be to keep the morning sun off, though (east facing box).

Matt
All quite normal behaviour. I think the bird can feel probably with beak sensor whether the egg is too hot or cold and will adjust accordingly. She doesn't want them to get too cold or hot obviously otherwise incubation will start when there are more eggs to be laid and too cold the egg cell will die. She is quite in control of this which is so fascinating and marvellous!

A little video or two of Lily's big day. Hope you can see her behaviour change to sitting quietly and breathing heavily and then the egg reveal!!!! Banana! .
Sorry it's not very clear but she was right up in the corner so difficult to see her bottom! Prior to this she was pacing about up and down to the nest hole looking to see if Gish was up and about no doubt Laughing Laughing Laughing

Haven't learnt to edit films yet so they run in one swoop Roll on the floor laughing

Thanks Sue

Lily has been away from her nest all day again. Think in past years the other mums left the eggs for a few hours but came back to check at least once. First time this has happened I think? Still you live and learn as they say! Very Happy
