It looks like we're now down to four chicks. Satchmo the biggest and strongest is literally head and shoulders above the others. Gina has removed at least two chicks, and over the last few day I have only managed to count four remainders.

Fingers crossed as there is lots of wing flapping taking place.

Here's a picture of the four remaining chicks with parents. Gina and Gino are starting to feed through the nest box entrance as it is getting a bit crowded in there.

There is also a stark difference between the size and progression of the four chicks.

Yes, they were doing OK up until last weekend when we saw Gina remove two chicks, and since then two more have gone. There's a vast difference in size and weight of the remaining four. Fingers crossed for next week's weather.

I love the live feed Joe. Gosh they aren't far off are they. This makes me even more determined to get my icatcher back up and running. Was the loss of chicks weather related?

Not sure, Sammi. We've had two days of heavy rain here, but these chicks have all grown at different rates. One of them is almost ready to go, while one of the others has only just opened its' eyes.

Should be an interesting week.

Gone! - Without a bye your leave, or thank you.

Woke up this morning to find an empty nest box, and the chicks had fledged at first light before the cameras kicked in. Doh!

We've seen 3 in the trees in the back garden with Satchmo already using the home made feeder. I feel he will survive but I think two others who got out this morning have done so too early.

This is the first time we've encountered a mass de-camp from the nestbox in such a short space of time, usually it takes most of the day for everyone to leave, and this is also the earliest I've known.

Hopefully Satchmo will make it back next year. Looking forward to it already.

PS there are a couple of dead chicks in the box which I will remove in a few days time when we take the box down. I've also turned the live feed off, but will get it back an running when I move the cameras to one of the feeders.

Well Joe. Banana! Cheers Wine

'I see trees of green, red roses too, I see them bloom for me and you, and I think to myself what a wonderful world'

Congrats go to you for caring about installing a box in the first place and to them for getting this far. It has been another year of highs and lows on this forum. But this is another success even if some have been lost.

Hope Satchmo will come back and sing for you next year - he was good in his day! Laughing Keep safe little ones. Fingers crossed

Kathy

Thanks, Kathy.

We still have one more box with a family of Blue Tits without a camera, so it will be interesting to see when they leave.

Well, that's it for this year in Brabourne. A successful year, with three Blue Tit chicks plus the two adults making it from the camera box. (5 casualties given burials with full Avian honours).

We had another family from the box without cameras and they have all fled successfully.

Two more boxes to check but they are not on our property so I'll have to wait until I see my neighbour.

We knew nothing about the occupants of this box, in fact we never saw anybody using it.

Does anyone recognize the nest? It's mainly straw with a feather shell inside including Pheasant feathers, and some small ones from our hens.

Here's to next year.

*Edit PS. The only box unused was one facing North.

Could it be a Robin Joe. Not much good at identifying nests so it's a guess but they will use these types of boxes.
