Very sad Brian, so sorry. Every year we have tragedies and every year we try again. Makes you wonder how many perish where there are no camera. Feel for you.

That's a real bummer Brian - Just when things were going so well.

There's not much you can do when one of the parents is missing, for whatever reason, and just before the fledge when the chicks are being built up for the outside world, it doesn't matter whether it's the male or female.

I had a male killed a week before fledging a few years ago and the female managed to feed all the chicks to successfully fledge them, but only because my mealworm box was just across the lawn and kept topped up dawn till dusk
It was perhaps rather unfortunate that you were away for a few days, and weren't able to help.

We have to remain positive for next year - it's no good fretting over what might have been - best of luck for then - got to keep the GTs going.

Hi Brian
Such a shame. You know when you think about it the odds against a successful nest are huge. Like Sue says we are just seeing a small snapshot of the whole picture.
Hope next year sees a batter outcome.
