Hello everybody I am also new to the forum. My name is mary and I live in Herefordshire with my husband, our 2 sons having now 'grown up' at gone to university. We have just moved into a smaller house but with a lovely big garden, and there are some nesting boxes that I want to make sure remain in use, so I am here for some hints and tips!

Hello Mary, and welcome to the Forum.
2011 was our best year ever for successful fledglings - 26 from our three boxes! Banana! We are lucky to have quite a few mature trees in and near our (quite small) garden, and thick hedges on three sides - but we also supply a good variety of food throughout the year, which usually attracts a fair number of birds a lot of the time.

When we first moved here 20 years ago there were very few birds, and I was so disappointed, but it didn't take long before the numbers gradually increased as I started putting up feeders. Do you know if any of your boxes were used regularly for nesting - it might be an idea to take them down and check them, though this should be done before the end of the month.

Good luck - and we'll do our best to answer any questions.

Hello Everyone, I'm in Leicester, about 6 miles from the centre so quite near open country. A smallish garden, a conifer hedge but no trees apart from our 9 foot Ivy stump, the remains of an old flowering cherry that died, robins and blackbirds have nested in the ivy, not in the same year. We put up our first camera box mid January 2012, had Blue Tits inside examing it on March 11th. Since then apart from a resident drowsy bee nothing until today, 26th March when one Blue Tit was inside for about 10 minutes. Fingers are crossed !

Hi, I inherited a box from previous owners of my house which, two years running, has had Tits of some description nesting - (I'm not brilliant with colours!).
This year, same story as last - lots of feeding and noise from chicks, then suddenly nothing.

I don't think the feeding can have lasted more than a fortnight.

Any ideas?

Patrick

Hi Patrick

The bird is an adult Blue Tit, probably the female taking a poo sack from the nest.

At first the chicks don't have a voice so if you have heard them for two weeks then the reason the box is quiet is they have fledged. I am not an expert on nest boxes and you might get another opinion but that is mine.

Lucky you to have had a successful fledging as so many on this site this year have had disasters due to the wet, cold spring.

Hi All, my name is Jim and I'm a keen watcher of the garden birds that live in my neighbourhood in Glasgow. I have a nest box with a camera installed and have had mixed results over the past few years. disappointingly this year we had 7 eggs laid and only 2 hatched. 1 chick lasted 4 days and the other just over a week..so sad. Next year maybe...

Hello Jim, only just spotted your post, sorry so long in responding. Most of us post in the 'Bird Box' section with all the news at this time of year so sorry if we've ignored you.
Very sad about your nest. Seems to have been a strange year all round. However there have been some successes too - don't know if you've been following the forum?!
Hope you have more luck next season.
Sue
