Hello everyone. I'm new to this as received a bird box with webcam for Christmas 2012 but unfortunately did not get much interest in it last year. Have re-sited the box for this year and had lots of interest between February and end of March but then nothing until this week when a pair of blue tits discovered the box on Monday afternoon. They have not roosted overnight but I am delighted that after 3 days of coming and going, they decided to start nest building on Thursday. I'm sorry to say that they seem a bit clueless. I have piled lots of moss that I raked from the lawn near to the box but they are making very slow progress. I am concerned that they may have "missed the boat" and are a few weeks behind everyone else that I have seen online who seem to be hatching chicks already. Are they too late or or should I just keep everything crossed for them? All tips very gratefully received. Thank you.
Oh, I'm in Southampton by the way.

Hello Rainbow, and welcome to the Forum. I think it is rather late for starting to build a nest - but possibly not too late.

Thank you for such a prompt response. I'll keep my fingers crossed for them and keep you posted. I will attempt to post some pictures too.

Hi Rainbow

No you are not too late, my Babs started nest building last Sunday and she has 2 eggs at the moment but inbetween laying she is still constructing. Granted I am further north than you but it is all down to the food supply and when/what is available. I think the birds have a different calendar to us and they know best-always!

Moss/grass gathering may come from different places so as not to attract attention to the position of the nest.

Good luck hope all goes well.

Kathy

After 4 days of nest building, all activity seems to have stopped and the pair of blue tits have not been in the box for the past 24 hours. Crying or Very sad I'm hoping it's a blip but am worried that they have given up...

Two weeks after abandoning a half constructed nest, the male blue tit returned yesterday with a new female. They have visited several times over the past two days and the female has started to bring grass into the box this evening! Could this be a second brood or just confused first timers?

Good luck to you Rainbow, but they better get a move on now though.

You're not too far from my location, just east along the motorway Very Happy
