I'm hearing a lot of Redwing over Cookstown tonight. It's such a weird and lovely sound.
They're like the winter Swift, when I first hear them I know things are about to get chilly Smile

Hi fsphil
Lucky you, we only see Redwings in January when it's snowing or extremely frosty. They come from the fields nearby, when food is in short supply, to our garden to feast on the Holly and Pyracantha berries which have been left by the Blackbirds and are as regular as clockwork! They are always in flocks of six or more, sometimes amongst them is the odd Fieldfare guest but I have never seen them eating stuff from our bird table. You should see them trying to balance on the very prickly leaves of the holly. Needless to say they stuff themselves and fly off as quickly as possible! Beautiful creatures though wish we saw them more often, they have such a sweet song. Like you say are we in for another bad winter?

Regards
Kathy

I don't see them very often. Only one really bad winter a few years ago when I saw quite a few for the first time. Usually I only hear them flying overhead at night, just before and after winter. They can be quite loud too, sometimes I hear them indoors with just a window opened.

We haven't seen any Redwings for a few years - but we hoped the abundant crop of pyracantha berries might attract them, as it has in the past.
