I have a blue tit box which originally had 13 eggs 10 hatched and now every day a couple of babies disappear, I think only one parent is around - and although she is in and out all the time dosnt seem to be feeding them - I am now down to 2 very week looking birds 5 days old and theres still a dead one in the nest. I bought some waxworms and calci worms for the mum to use but she just flies over them. I am so tempted to intervene but I know I shouldnt. I cant watch anymore its too sad Sad I ned to be told to leave them alone or im going in ......

Hello suzee2, and welcome to the Forum. I think there is no point in intervening here - to have any hope of rearing such young chicks you would need lots of experience in such things. Sorry - but you did ask!

Hello,

I knew that really just had to be told, Anyways that was last week and I did leave them alone......but they died.....so sad to see them one after the other..but the mum was still trying - I just think she was a bit clueless??? seem to be feeding them more flies that were too big and they couldnt get them down. I dont know, I have had the camera in the box for 6 years, the first 3 years everything went perfectly but the last three have been a dissaster, one year there were 2 pairs arguing overr it emptying each others nest out etc in the end no one used it, last year the dad disappeared and then the mum never came back and they all died. and now this year Sad Sad Sad If it isnt good news next year the cameras on ebay - cant cope with seeing them die Sad

Hello again suzee - I can understand your distress, but you did have three good years! Did you see this reply that I received from the BTO, when I asked if they had heard of breeding problems this year: http://www.forum.biggonline.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=7179

I take part in their Nest Box Challenge, so eventually I'll get a detailed report of how things have been throughout the country this year.
