Hi,
I've just joined the forum today. I live in the North East of the UK.

Last year we hung up two feeders for goldfinches and had, perhaps, 1 - 6 goldfinches visiting on average. On one rare occasion we had approx 12 -14. Sadly, this year we've had the odd, rare visitor who hasn't stayed or come back with his mates. We have changed the seed this year as we wondered if Niger seeds go off???
Does anyone know of any reason why they may not have come back this year?
Any comments, ideas, information will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Robina.

WE have dozens in Cheshire, but, I NEVER use niger, always use sunflower hearts, which seem palatable to most birds..... Laughing

I'm from the north east too. We use Niger and sunflower hearts and they eat both.

Hi Tim and Scribe,
Thanks for your messages. We'll go out and buy some sunflower hearts to try. Just wondered if anyone knew any particular reasons.

Do you know if they "go away" for the Winter and return later in the year?

Thanks.
