Hi,
I just want to know if anyone here can ID what I think is a bird noise in the video link.

The light is my dog and this is a country area in s Herts, S England. Prior to this recording I heard what I think is the same bird make a loud, eiree screeching noise on just one occasion, on that occasion it was moving around.

I have heard this recorded sound a few times in more or less the same place, I have never heard the sound from the distance when approaching with my light up dog so I assume it might be some kind of warning or annoyance.

Because of the similar sounding loud screech it once made I assumed it might be a little owl but I have found nothing like either sound on sound effects sites for a little owl.

I have been approaching or arrived at this particular area around 4:30pm – 5pm throughout winter so its just past ‘dusk’.

Interesting voice. It is Tyto alba (barn owl).

Ohhh, thanks a lot for that reply, I'm really glad I know that now, I hate being puzzled for long periods (the entire winter) like that.

I don't know enough about their after dark hunting behaviours, I'm quite sure it is sitting in a tree when I hear it, I allways 'assumed' they just flew over territory, killed a prey & went back to their home habitat, do they actually sit in trees waiting?

It's nice to know barn owls are still around that area, been going there for decades but never saw one when there's enough light to see, do you think it was the dog, the light & my presence that promted it to make that call, is that call a territory marker?

Thanks

I'we learned that at least Strix and Surnia species mostly stalk in in one spot and attack when prey comes near, whereas Asio species fly over open areas to find voles.

Barn owl is the only European owl that I've never observed. Xeno-Canto webpage says it is "flight call", and it reminds me of low-volume voices that many owls make when they feel disturbed.
