I was sailing across Christchurch Bay a few miles off the Dorset coast on Friday and Sunday (2nd & 4th Sept) and observed many small groups of swallows heading NORTH just as one sees in the Spring.
Does anybody know why they would be doing this?

I have no idea why they would be doing this. Normally swallows around this time start their eased migration to the South, as much as I'm aware, but why they would move North is beyond me. Are you sure you have the direction right? I read an article that they were seen preparing for migration to the South only last week...

As a qualified Yachtmaster, I definitely know north from south! To clarify, the swallows were flying from the English Channel towards the south coast of England.
