We can try, but there's nothing to see but a half inch gap between eaves and wall. Birds are in and out feeding (presumably) all the time. No sign of any droppings underneath though. We found it hard to believe, but thought that maybe other people might have similar experiences.

PS My husband has had a closer look, and there are some droppings on the window frame, top to bottom and a small heap accumulating on the cement window cill.

House martins nest in the roofs of houses here, too, Liz ours seem to do very well, so I wouldn't worry too much. I've no idea whether or not they actually build a mud nest inside the roofs, as it's impossible to see in, but they've definitely nested there every year since the houses were built. I suppose it's a nice, warm, sheltered, safe spot for a nest!

Hi Kitty!

Thank you so much for reassuring us that our much loved house martins are behaving in a suitably martin fashion! We had begun to think we were imagining what was happening. We also wondered if they had gone into the roof instead of building a mud nest because at the time they would normally have been building it was very very dry here and no mud around. Our other house martins just had to patch up their old nests a bit. It is absolutely wonderful being able to enjoy a morning cuppa in bed whilst watching the birds flying in and out of their tiny slit of a front door! What agility they have.

I think this new behaviour will be of great interest to the bird world. Hurry with photos!
