Had a drive to Southport coast road this am, beautiful morning cold frosty with blue skies Shocked after the dull grey of the last few weeks.
Good numbers of Gulls, The adult winter Herring Gulls looked to be in superb condition, as did the Black-Headed Gulls, with a big number, now showing their full summer hoods, also saw the best number of Lesser blacked-Backed Gulls i have seen for a good while around the Coast-road. Best of the morning, was a flock of Skylarks, and a hunting Barn-Owl.

Did you go to RSPB Marshside?

We've only been there once, when staying with my sister in Crosby but we were unlucky with the weather and didn't see many birds - but the next day RSPB Martin Mere made up for it. (I lived in that area all my school years - but now I'm an ex-pat)!

Hi Elizabeth, I parked up on the carpark next to what used to be the sand works, non of the hides were open, they dont open now till 8am sometimes later due to vandals Rolling Eyes Mind you this was 6-30am, lol. Its been months since my last visit and thinks have changed a lot. But it was a great morning for Gulls, and they were my target birds. I remember you telling me about your times in Southport, i have not lived there for 20 + years and to be honest i dont miss it even though its my home town.
I stayed for about an hour, then drove back through Banks/Hesketh Bank to have a look over the marsh.

I understand that the still haphazard opening hours of the hides at Marshside are down to there being no paid staff and that the opening depends entirely
on volunteers.

I may be wrong but isn't Martin Mere, Wildfowl and Wetland Trust, the Slimbridge based group?
I've been twice, once with a group of primary school children and we stayed on the show ponds with the captive birds. The second time the Whoopers were in residence on the main pond along with other birds: a truly fabulous day out.

Oops! Embarassed Embarassed

You're quite right, John . Martin Mere certainly is a WWT site as I was well aware - another "senior moment" I fear.

We've visited all the WWT sites in the UK, except Castle Espie in County Down, the London Wetland Centre being the most frequently visited.

Are you from Southport, too, EB, or Crosby? I have an aunt in Southport, and we spent all our holidays there as children. I have very fond memories of that huuuuuge beach and the long walk to the sea! They used to land aeroplanes on the beach, I remember my Dad trying to talk my Mum into going on one of the tourist flights. She wouldn't go, so I did instead – I was scared stiff! I was only about 9, and I was convinced the flimsy little aircraft was going to crash.

Neither! I lived in Thornton for (very nearly) all my school years - ie about 1½miles further on towards Southport from Crosby. My primary school was in Crosby and my secondary school was in in Waterloo. I then went to Manchester University and only went back in the holidays.

I'm not really sure where I "come from"!!! I was actually born in London, lived in Manchester for three years after degree day - and have lived in the south ever since.
