Birding Outings
This is the one that got seen off the barn roof just after this shot.
I 'pished' this one out of the reed-bed. More in 'Album Discussions'
This shows the (comparitively) unusual variety of guillemot with a white ring around its eye. Apparently they are more common in the north. You can see how it differs from the normal variety next to it.

Surprising as it may seem when you see them close up, but from a distance a razorbill can easily be mistaken for a guillemot! They are difficult to photograph well as their eyes are a dark brown and are hard to pick out.
Its not so much that they are sunbathing, but that they cannot avoid the sun. They pant to keep cool as do all these birds. Their plumage is in fact dark brown, not black as can be clearly seen in this picture. Note also their eyes which normally have no white around them.
Kittiwakes normally lay 2 eggs. Their nest is a solid drum of grass, mud, moss and seaweed by continuous addition and firm trampling of the material by both birds. Incubation duties are also shared by both birds.

This shag is also nesting inside the rope boundary. The parent is shielding her eggs from the sun - it was hot!
Kittiwakes are the fourth commonest breeding bird on the Farne Islands according to last year's statistics (after puffins, guillemots and terns). Some 3000 bred there last year.
According to the statistics for 2004, over 28 thousand puffins nest on Staple and Inner Farne. Here are two of them!
The authorities put up a notice to Nesting Birds - however for some strange reason, the birds ignored it. (You'll see the notice later!)
